The Amalfi Coast

After breakfast, we took the Metro to Roma Termini and boarded the high-speed train to Napoli Centrale.  Our train tickets were in Business class, and we had assigned seats with overhead storage for our suitcases.  I arranged for a driver to meet us at the Naples station and take us to Amalfi, with a stop at Pompeii.

Hire guides recommended in Rick Steves' books.  I took someone else's suggestion, and the guides were good, but Rick’s are better!

This morning we hiked up to the cemetery as we were told it had the best view in Amalfi.  then after a relaxing afternoon, we walked to Atrani and found a cozy bar on the beach. The new Pope was elected that night and we chatted with the owner's nephew, Salvatore, who shared his excitement about Pope Leo XIV and quickly became our new friend.

Our hotel, Residenza Luce, was fantastic.  A wonderful family owns it and the place is spotless!  

Today we took a bus to Bomerano to hike the Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods.  I used the All Trails app and we hiked 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1,368 feet.  The views were spectacular!  Arriving in Positano we did a little exploring, ate gelato, and caught a boat back to Amalfi.

DAILY TIP

The Path of the Gods is best done wearing shoes, not flip flops, as there are some rocky portions.  I wore a pair of Keen KS86 sneakers the entire time in Italy and never had sore feet.

We started the day with a tour of the lemon farm in Amalfi and tasted their homemade limoncello - delicious!  Then we visited the Amalfi Cathedral, dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew.  After that we took one last stroll through town and along the water, before we had to pack our suitcases for a long day of travel the next day.

 

DAILY TIP  

Vincenzo, who owns Residenze Luce, was always very helpful and booked a driver to take us to Naples for our flight. The driver was friendly and pointed out his family's olive trees when we passed by!
